In May 2018, Estonian IT services company Andmevara AS completed Moldovan National Archive digitisation project.
The project facilitates citizens' access to historical documents kept at the National Archives. 250 000 documents were digitised during the 2 year development cooperation project, financed by Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The digitized documents refer to the history of the Bessarabian Orthodox Church during the Russian imperial occupation in the 19th century, this being one of the most sought-after topics by researchers and history lovers in Moldova. Most of the scanned documents were written in Slavonic and Romanian languages.
Now this archive is accessible on-line and it is easily searchable since metadata for each digitised document was translated and entered into a database, developed by Andmevara. Original copies of the digitized documents have been removed from the study room of the National Archives in Chisinau, to be protected from further deterioration and damage.
For continuing Moldovan National heritage digitization, a professional scanning solution, including a search engine, was donated by Andmevara AS, together with special training on how to digitize fragile archive materials.
The State Archive of the Republic of Moldova currently has over one million archive documents.
Over the last 10 years Andmevara has helped to digitise over 16.5 million of various paper documents, mainly in Estonia and Moldova. Digitisation of historical documents is often sensitive in nature, data integrity is critical, and very high security and confidentiality requirements apply. Therefore, we are happy to bring our expertise to Moldova and help the country to develop a direction in the field of archiving and digitization of its historical documents.
